Roger Mason -- Telluride's painter laureate
Roger Mason graduated with an art degree from Pratt Institute in New York.
Though he painted in his formative years, painting remained a hobby for him while he played bass with the likes of Dylan, Itzhak Pearlman and The Band. Painting is musical to him, and they both intertwine and fuel each other in an artistic way. Roger claims to be a Realist but his unique style goes far beyond direct representation of natural form. He has the ability to see surreal aspects in reality, and, sometimes, his images appear more abstract than real.
He discovered Telluride while playing at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival in 1979 and fell in love with the town and the people. He's been painting Telluride in his colorful abstract realist style ever since. Main Street Telluride is his studio when he's not in his home town of Chatham, NY and he can be found putting the final strokes on a canvas that captures a moment in time.
